History of the taxis

The word taxi is derived from the ancient Greek word τάξις (taxi), meaning 'to pay'. The name is derived from the ancient Latin taxa (tax), which was originally used for rental cars. The text is a reduction of the French word 'taximètre'. The Germans call this device a 'taxameter'. The history of public rental cars goes back hundreds of years, even before cars. The first public service work was recorded in 1605 in London. In 1625, tourists from London rented carts. In England the Hackney Carriage law was passed as the first law to pay a horse-drawn carriage tax.  In 1636, the first taxi in London appeared. Back in 1637, Nicolas Sauvage of Paris provided horse and buggy in the French city. They are known as Fiacres. Hackney Carriers licenses were issued in London from 1662.
